The Great Divide
The Great Divide
Ceramic, concrete, copper
Tower is approximately 8' tall
2008

The Great Divide symbolizes the rapidly shrinking middle class of America. While the upper 1% prospers, the rest gradually crumbles and the gap becomes more extreme. The tower in this piece is handbuilt of ceramic and fired to cone 5. It was built in several sections but fired at one time by stacking three electric kilns around the piece. The dome is made of pounded copper. The smaller structures were made of cast concrete.
